Our Health and Safety Trainings for Colony Foods of Lawrence continued today addressing topics of Accident and Injury Prevention. The State of Massachusetts provides Safety Grants for Massachusetts companies designed at keeping employees healthy and safe in the workplace, and Colony Foods was awarded one of its grants this year.
Colony Foods already has strong safety trainings in place, specifically addressing the complex systems and machinery it utilizes daily. As site manager George Abdullah and I discussed how best to address the topic, George noted how most accidents and injuries were "due to being stupid, to not paying attention, to not having your head in the game."
Indeed, did you know that a recent scientific study showed that 47% of the time, people are thinking of something other than what they are doing? Think of that next time you are in a meeting, or driving down the road! Distraction can easily be seen as a leading cause of car accidents and work place accidents.
We created "Mindful Accident and Injury Prevention" with the goal of introducing Mindfulness into the workplace and creating an awareness of how pervasive inattention is. Mindfulness brings us to the here and now, and enables acute awareness of ourselves, our actions, and our environment--and this awareness can be used to improve safety in the workplace and in our daily lives.
